Our Mission
At Knowledge is Power, we are committed to promoting early childhood literacy and bridging the literacy gap between children from wealthier and underprivileged families by providing underserved children with the access to books that will set them up for success in school and beyond.
We believe that books are beautiful tools that inspire and empower–and that every child should have access to them.
The Problem
While all children in the U.S. might have the opportunity to go to school, many of the factors of academic success are determined before a child has even starts kindergarten. Students whose families were able to afford preschool are at an advantage; so are those who had parents who could read to them and begin to teach them the alphabet; so are those who simply had access to books from infancy. Thus, equal access to books across the socioeconomic spectrum is simply not a reality.
Our Solution
Through fundraising and drives, we collect children’s books in English and Spanish. We hold book distributions and literacy circles at food banks and partner organizations throughout Marin County where we read to children to build comprehension skills, match students with grade-level books for them to keep, and connect parents with literacy resources.
